Shawn D. Sorensen
Shawn D Sorensen is an Independent New Westminster School Trustee Candidate who lives and works in the non-profit arts sector in the city.
After training as an Early Childhood Educator, Shawn worked at Queens Avenue Daycare for three years before returning to post secondary as a mature student. He attended the Langara College Studio 58 program in the Technical Arts and toured for three years with Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia. During his time on tour, he got to see schools and students around the world. His volunteer experience includes serving as the treasurer for the Parents Advisory Council of his child’s school; the board president for his previous housing co-operative, a member of the board for ZeeZee Theatre, and as a volunteer with New West Pride. Shawn was awarded the 2021 Frank Rigney Big Brother of the Year award for his volunteering as a Big Brother with Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver. You can often find Shawn walking the family dog along the Quay, enjoying a beverage at S&O, or taking in a concert. His favourite thing about New West is that it feels like a co-op; a collection of folks that support each other and are passionate about their communities and he wants schools to offer the same experience for children.
As our children prepare to enter SD40 in the next few years, we support Shawn as we know his Early Childhood Education and Arts background will inform the decisions he makes to support young children and families.
Pedro Chamaleco-founder, Rice & Beans Theatre
Shawn takes the time to consider everyone's perspectives, and will always work towards collaboration. He continues to model how to hold space and champion for voices that are often silenced or ignored.
Erin JefferyCommunications and Marketing Director, Massey Theatre
Shawn is driven solely by a desire to contribute to the educational experience of all students and educators. I wholeheartedly believe that he is the right Independent choice for our local School Board.
